Potatoes
Year Round
Downey Potato Farms follows conventional growing practices.
Downey’s Farm, one of our core potato growers, located in a region known for it’s fertile soil – Honeywood Silt Loam.
A few years ago, a company called Highland Companies tried to buy up large swaths of this region to build a limestone quarry. Many community members raised concerns about the devastating environmental impact of this plan, and came together to stop it through events such as Foodstock (many chefs will remember that day!). Following this upheaval, Trevor (whose family has operated Downey for four generations) took over as president of Downey Farms.
Trevor travelled to Peru a few years back to find unique heritage varieties to grow in Ontario, and the team at Downey have worked hard to revitalize their farm. Distributing to chefs is one of their latest ventures!
